Overview

The Curley Group was engaged by Wynne Construction to deliver specialist demolition and structural repair works within Llandudno General Hospital. The project formed part of a wider refurbishment and upgrade programme aimed at improving clinical spaces and operational efficiency.

Working within a live healthcare environment demanded rigorous planning, strict control measures, and seamless coordination with hospital management to ensure patient safety and uninterrupted clinical operations.

Scope of works

  • Targeted demolition works, including removal of internal partitions, ceilings, redundant services, and legacy structural elements.
  • Structural alterations to existing load‑bearing walls and floor slabs, incorporating controlled breakout, propping, and compliant reconstruction.
  • Temporary works design and installation, ensuring safe sequencing of structural interventions and maintaining integrity of adjacent hospital areas.
  • Steelwork alterations, including fabrication and installation of new structural steel members to support revised layouts and upgraded hospital infrastructure.

Key challenges

  • Delivering intrusive demolition and structural works adjacent to active hospital departments.
  • Managing noise, vibration, and dust within sensitive clinical zones.
  • Designing and installing temporary works to maintain structural stability throughout phased alterations.
  • Coordinating access and logistics within a constrained hospital estate.

Delivery approach

The Curley Group deployed a specialist team experienced in healthcare‑sector working, supported by in‑house temporary works engineers. Activities were sequenced to minimise disruption, with isolation zones, dust suppression systems, and enhanced monitoring implemented throughout. Daily coordination with Wynne Construction and hospital representatives ensured transparent communication and rapid response to operational needs.

Outcome

The project was delivered safely, on programme, and to the required clinical standards, enabling Wynne Construction to progress subsequent refurbishment phases without delay. The Curley Group’s technical capability, disciplined planning, and collaborative approach ensured high‑quality structural outcomes within one of North Wales’ key healthcare facilities.
