Overview
The Curley Group was appointed by The Momentum Group to deliver the complex demolition and enabling works associated with the decommissioning of the former Harvey Nichols store within Liverpool ONE. The project formed a critical early phase of Project Escala, enabling future redevelopment and reconfiguration of the retail asset.
Works were undertaken within a live city‑centre environment, requiring meticulous planning, controlled sequencing, and strict adherence to safety and stakeholder management protocols.
Scope of works
- Full internal strip‑out of the Harvey Nichols retail unit, including fixtures, fittings, MEP services, partitions, ceilings, and back‑of‑house areas.
- Removal and disposal of all passenger lifts and escalators, including isolation, dismantling, temporary works, and controlled extraction routes.
- Formation of new lift openings through existing reinforced concrete floors, including saw‑cutting, breakout, temporary propping, and structural trimming.
- Construction of new lift shafts, integrating fire‑rated linings, structural steelwork, and compliant shaft interfaces.
- Supply and installation of steel infills to redundant openings and escalator voids, reinstating floor integrity and load‑bearing performance.
- Construction of a new fire wall, providing compartmentation in accordance with current Building Regulations and the future tenant layout.
Key challenges
- Working within a fully enclosed multi‑storey retail unit with restricted access and adjacent trading stores.
- Removal of heavy mechanical equipment (lifts and escalators) within confined spaces.
- Structural alterations to existing floor plates while maintaining building stability.
- Coordination with Liverpool ONE operations teams to minimise disruption to the public realm.
Delivery approach
The Curley Group deployed a dedicated project team comprising demolition specialists, structural operatives, and temporary works engineers. Works were sequenced to maintain safe access routes, protect retained elements, and ensure continuous compliance with Liverpool ONE’s operational requirements. Daily coordination meetings with the client and centre management ensured transparent communication and rapid issue resolution.
Outcome
The project was delivered on programme and within budget, providing The Momentum Group with a fully prepared structural shell ready for redevelopment. The Curley Group’s technical capability, proactive planning, and collaborative approach ensured a smooth transition from demolition to construction, supporting the wider ambitions of Project Escala.
